I stand with Tiffany Suetos.
An unfortunate incident took place this week between a Temecula Valley Unified School District teacher and residents who observed her taking videos of the elementary school to which she is assigned. I couldn’t help but wonder how the teacher’s idea of building connections with her incoming first graders by taking pictures of herself in front of their school would dissolve into such an angry confrontation.
The teacher was accused of not working at the site and she found herself crying as she searched for an administrator to prove she belonged there. As a candidate for school board in that district I wondered what I could do to ease the tensions that would lead to such a confrontation. We are all living in challenging times. Now, more than ever, it is incumbent upon adults to be role models for our children in the way we behave.
As part of my platform I am advocating for programs that help children empower themselves with bullies. I am also supporting an inclusive curriculum for ethnic studies and the history of racism, antisemitism and other forms of prejudice.
We owe it to the children to be the change we hope to see. It is my vision that Temecula schools be places of inclusion and compassion as well as institutions of superior academic learning.For this to continue, we need great leadership and a community that supports our goals.
Esta semana tuvo lugar un desafortunado incidente entre una maestra del Distrito Escolar Unificado del Valle de Temecula y los residentes que la observaron tomando videos de la escuela primaria a la que fue asignada.
No pude evitar preguntarme cómo la idea de la maestra de establecer conexiones con sus alumnos entrantes de primer grado al tomar fotos de sí misma frente a su escuela se disolvió en una confrontación tan enojada. El maestro fue acusada de no trabajar en el sitio y se encontró llorando mientras buscaba un administrador para demostrar que pertenecía allí.
Como candidato a la junta escolar en su distrito, me preguntaba qué podía hacer para aliviar las tensiones que llevarían a tal confrontación. Todos vivimos en tiempos difíciles. Ahora, más que nunca, corresponde a los adultos ser modelos a seguir para nuestros hijos en la forma en que nos comportamos.
Como parte de mi plataforma, abogo por programas que ayuden los niños se empoderan con los matones. También estoy apoyando un plan de estudios inclusivo para estudios étnicos y la historia del racismo, el antisemitismo y otras formas de prejuicio.Se lo debemos a nuestros hijos por ser el cambio que esperamos ver.
Mi visión es que las escuelas de Temecula sean lugares de inclusión y compasión, así como instituciones de aprendizaje académico superior. Para que esto continúe, necesitamos grandes liderazgo y una comunidad que apoya nuestras metas.
